Dear Handpan Enthusiasts,
Ensuring the longevity and quality of your precious instrument is crucial, and it requires following some simple yet vital care and maintenance practices. Here are our tips for keeping your Handpan in top condition:
- Avoid Extreme Heat Exposure: Do not play the instrument in direct sunlight or when it is overheated. The metal becomes more malleable with heat, increasing the risk of detuning.
- Beware of Moisture: Avoid leaving your Handpan wet or damp. Oxidation and rust can irreparably damage the instrument. After each use, it is essential to dry and clean the Handpan with a cotton or microfiber cloth. If not used for extended periods, store it outside the case in a dry environment.
- Moderation in Playing: Play your Handpan with moderation. The metal thickness is thin (about 0.8 to 1.5 mm), and excessive pressure can alter its tuning.
- Regular Cleaning and Oiling: We highly recommend cleaning the instrument after every use and oiling it every 30/60 days. Use specific products like our Sew Handpan Care, specially created for Handpan maintenance. This natural oil protects the metal from oxygen and moisture, preventing rancidity and unpleasant odors.
To apply, put a few drops on the dome and spread it over the entire surface with a cotton or microfiber cloth. Repeat the same process for both the upper dome with the notes and the lower part with the Gu.
- Rust Removal: If you notice signs of rust, you can remove them with “Miracle Cloth” wipes or gently scrape with a very thin “Scotch Brite” sponge. Then, clean and oil the Handpan as previously indicated.
- Periodic Tuning Check: Regularly check the tuning of your Handpan. For detailed instructions on how to do this, refer to our article dedicated to Handpan tuning.
Remember, regular use of our Sew Handpan Care not only ensures the best protection for your instrument but also helps maintain a clear and crystalline sound, essential for optimal performance.
Take care of your Handpan, and it will continue to gift you with beautiful melodies for years to come!
